The Science Behind the Shade

Transitions lenses react to both light and heat. They're made with photochromic molecules that respond when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. When UV rays hit the lenses, these molecules change structure, causing the lens to darken. Step back indoors (where there's far less UV), and the molecules return to their original shape – and your lenses become clear again.

This reaction happens in a matter of seconds and is triggered by the environment around you – whether you’re heading out for a dog walk, driving on a sunny day, or simply popping out for lunch.

It’s Not Just About the Sun

While UV is the main driver of the tinting process, temperature also plays a role. Transitions lenses may take a little longer to darken or lighten depending on how warm or cold it is outside. In cooler temperatures, they often darken more intensely, while in warmer weather, they may appear slightly lighter.

This doesn’t affect their effectiveness though – you’ll still get the UV protection and light filtering you need, helping reduce eye strain and glare whatever the season.
