New uniform?

School shoes?

Stationery?

Eye test?

With the new school year approaching, don’t forget to add your child’s vision to the back-to-school checklist.

Children don’t always realise when their eyesight has changed, so regular eye tests are an important way to make sure they can see clearly and comfortably in the classroom.

Don’t Rely on School Vision Screening

Many children are offered a vision screening in Reception year, but this is usually a one-off check rather than something that continues throughout their school years.

That’s why it’s worth making a yearly eye test part of your child’s routine. Their eyesight can change as they grow, even if they haven’t mentioned any problems.

At Kelly Eyecare, we check both your child’s vision and overall eye health, while monitoring any changes over time.

NHS eye tests are free for children under 16, and for those under 19 in full-time education.

Why Good Vision Matters

Clear vision supports reading, writing, seeing the board, using screens and concentrating in class.

Look out for signs such as:

· Squinting or closing one eye

· Sitting very close to the TV

· Holding books or devices close

· Frequent headaches or tired eyes

· Struggling to see the board

· Losing their place while reading

Keeping an Eye on Myopia

Myopia, or short-sightedness, often develops during childhood and can progress as children grow.

At our Brockenhurst practice, we use advanced MYAH technology to measure and monitor changes in the eye, helping us recommend suitable myopia management where needed.

Healthy Eye Habits

Simple habits can also help support healthy vision:

· Spend plenty of time outdoors

· Take regular breaks from screens

· Follow the 20-20-20 rule during close-up work
