Managing screen time and eye strain as the nights draw in…

As autumn sets in and the evenings get darker, we often find ourselves spending more time in front of screens. Whether it’s finishing off work, streaming a favourite series, or scrolling before bed, increased screen time combined with reduced daylight can leave our eyes feeling tired and strained.

Do darker months = increased eye strain?

Yes—and you’ve probably noticed it already!

When natural light fades, your screen becomes the brightest thing in the room, making your eyes work harder. The blue light from digital devices can also lead to strain, fatigue, difficulty with prolonged use, and even disrupted sleep. On top of that, central heating dries out the air—and your eyes.

What can you do about this?

● Ask our experts about computer glasses: they improve comfort, ease screen use, and reduce the effects of blue light.

● Use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to rest your eyes.

● Light your space: don’t sit in darkness with just your screen glowing—soft background lighting reduces contrast.

● Blink consciously: our blink rate drops at screens, which can cause dryness. Make an effort to blink more often.

● Adjust your set-up: position your screen at arm’s length, slightly below eye level, and avoid harsh brightness.

● Stay hydrated: drinking water and using lubricating drops can ease dryness made worse by heating.

The role of eye tests

Digital eye strain can sometimes be worsened by an outdated prescription or an undiagnosed issue such as dry eye syndrome. Regular eye tests don’t just check your sight—they also uncover underlying causes of discomfort and ensure your glasses or lenses are working for your lifestyle.

Darker nights don’t have to mean tired eyes!

If you’re concerned about your vision, or it’s been a while since your last check-up, book an eye test at your local Kelly Eyecare branch in Bournemouth, Brockenhurst, or Ringwood.

Our friendly team is here to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable this season and beyond.
