Dry Eye Treatment
Are your eyes feeling dry, gritty, watery or uncomfortable?
Dry eye is a common condition that can affect your everyday comfort and vision. At Kelly Eyecare, our experienced team can help identify what's causing your symptoms and recommend suitable treatments to help you manage them.
What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye occurs when your eyes don't produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly.
Your tears play an important role in keeping your eyes comfortable, healthy and properly lubricated. When the tear film isn't working as it should, you may experience irritation, discomfort or changes in your vision.
Dry eye can affect people of all ages, and symptoms can range from mild irritation to more persistent discomfort.
Common symptoms:
-
Dry, gritty or burning eyes
-
Excessive watering
-
Redness or irritation
-
Blurred or fluctuating vision
-
Tired or heavy-feeling eyes
-
Sensitivity to light
-
Discomfort when wearing contact lenses
What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye can affect anyone and may be influenced by a range of factors, including age, lifestyle, environment and certain medical conditions.
Some of the most common causes and contributing factors include:
Age and Hormonal Changes
Dry eye becomes more common with age, particularly after 50, but can also affect younger people.
Screen Time
Prolonged screen use reduces blinking, causing tears to evaporate more quickly.
Environmental Factors
Air conditioning, heating, wind and dry or dusty environments can contribute to dry eye.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses can sometimes affect the tear film, causing dryness and discomfort.
Make-up and Skincare
Certain products can block the oil-producing glands along the eyelids.
Medical Conditions and Medications
Some autoimmune conditions, thyroid disorders and medications can contribute to dry eye.
Eyelid Conditions
Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) can affect tear quality.
Diet and Nutrition
Vitamin A deficiency can contribute to dry eye, while omega-3 fatty acids may support tear film health.
Understanding what's causing your dry eye is an important first step towards finding the right treatment.
Dry Eye Assessments
Dry eye isn't the same for everyone, which is why understanding the cause of your symptoms is so important.
At Kelly Eyecare, our experienced optometrists can assess your eye health, discuss your symptoms and recommend suitable ways to manage your dry eye.
Depending on your individual needs, this may include advice on everyday eye care, specialist products or further treatment.
Our aim is to help you feel more comfortable and find a solution that works for you.

Dry Eye Treatment Options
There are several ways to manage dry eye, depending on the cause and severity of your symptoms. At Kelly Eyecare, our team can help you find the most suitable treatment for your individual needs.

Eye Drops
Lubricating eye drops can help relieve dryness, irritation and discomfort by adding moisture to the eyes and supporting the natural tear film. Different types are available depending on your symptoms.

Heat Treatments
Applying gentle warmth to the eyelids can help soften oils that have become thickened within the meibomian glands. This can help improve oil flow and reduce tear evaporation, particularly for people with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

The Peep Wand
The Peep Wand is a handheld warming device designed to gently heat the eyelids and help soften blocked oils in the meibomian glands.
It can help improve the natural flow of oils, reduce tear evaporation and relieve dry eye symptoms, making it a convenient option for managing dry eye at home.
Eye-Light Treatment
Eye-Light is a non-invasive treatment designed to improve the health of the eyelids and oil-producing glands. It combines two types of light therapy:
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
Helps reduce inflammation and soften blocked oils.
LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy)
Uses gentle red light to warm the eyelids and support healthier gland function.
NuLids Treatment
NuLids is a gentle eyelid-cleaning treatment carried out by your optometrist. It helps remove debris and build-up from the eyelids, supporting healthier eyelid hygiene.
At Kelly Eyecare, we recommend NuLids as the first step before Eye-Light Therapy, although it can also be used as a standalone treatment.
Eye-Light may be recommended for conditions such as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), blepharitis, ocular rosacea and persistent dry eye symptoms. It may also be suitable for some patients with Sjögren's syndrome.
Appointments typically last around 30 minutes, and your optometrist will assess whether the treatment is suitable for you.

Here Are Some Handy Tips
There are a few simple things you can do at home to help manage dry eye symptoms.
Keep Your Eyelids Clean
Maintain good eyelid hygiene to help prevent a build-up of debris and keep your eyelids healthy.
Take Regular Screen Breaks
Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Remember to blink regularly, too.
Use a Humidifier
Adding moisture to the air can help, particularly in dry indoor environments or rooms with central heating.
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support your general health.
Eat a Balanced Diet
Include a variety of fruit, vegetables and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids as part of a healthy diet.
